Picking up where his previous memoir leaves off, Sledge, a young marine in the First Division, traces his company's movements and charts his own difficult passage to peace following his horrific experiences in the Pacific. He reflects on his duty in the ancient city of Peiping now Beijing and recounts the difficulty of returning to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, and resuming civilian life haunted by the shadows of close combat.
This memoir offers an unrivaled firsthand account of World War II in the Pacific - what it looked like, sounded like, smelled like, and most of all, what it felt like to one who underwent all but the ultimate of its experiences.
John C. McManus, one of our most highly acclaimed historians of World War II, takes listeners from Pearl Harbor - a rude awakening for a military woefully unprepared for war - to Makin, a sliver of coral reef where the Army was tested against the increasingly desperate Japanese. In between were nearly two years of punishing combat as the Army transformed, at times unsteadily, from an undertrained garrison force into an unstoppable juggernaut, and America evolved from an inward-looking nation into a global superpower.
Published on the 75th anniversary of the battle and utilizing vivid accounts written by the combatants at Guadalcanal, along with marine corps and army archives and oral histories, Midnight in the Pacific is both a sweeping narrative and a compelling drama of individual marines, soldiers, and sailors caught in the crosshairs of history.
Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Gunter K. He wrote his illicit diary on any scraps of paper he could lay his hands on. As keeping a diary was strictly forbidden, he sewed the pages into the lining of his thick winter coat and deposited them with his mother on infrequent trips home on leave.
Strong Men Armed
The diary went missing, and it was when he was reunited with his daughter in America some 40 years later that it came to light and became Blood Red Snow. All of Robert Leckie's books on the subject are fascinating but for me this one ranks the highest. It's comprehensive in the journey through the Pacific conflict and tells the story through the eye of the fighting men. It is very disturbing and very moving but for readers of military history, no one puts you so directly into the experience of the soldiers who made that history.
I would love to read an equivalent from the Japanese perspective. It covered all significant actions in vivid detail yet provided great strategic overview. Highly recommended. I thought it would be a story told from the pov of the author but it was so much more. A complete 'salty' recap of the marines battling their way across the pacific. This is another Good Book of WW ll. If you like History and WW ll this is a must Book for you.
I found it to be very interesting and would recommend it to anyone.
I have listened to this book at least 10 times in a 3 year period. Very detailed without becoming monotonous. The narrator was awesome. Other than that, spot on, captivating book.
